Listen to this NPR story about Chris Castro, who is turning the “perfectly manicured lawns” in his Orlando neighborhood into “mini farms” with his program, Fleet Farming. Chris asks his neighbors to donate a portion of their lawns, which will be farmed by volunteers who ride from farm to farm, or “farmlette” as they call them, on bicycles. This farming is all done within a mile of the local farmers’ market. Currently, there is a wait list of 300 residents in the Orlando area waiting to donate their lawns to grow food.
This program shows that with a little creativity, sustainable, locally grown food can be accomplished anywhere. Get involved with Fleet Farming and support the movement!
