Between the 4th of July and Memorial Day, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans eat an estimated 7 billion hot dogs. Soft drinks, chips, meat, ice cream, and other unhealthy foods are are marketed heavily during these holidays, complete with red white and blue marketing campaigns lining the supermarket aisles.
As Woody Harrelson says in this video, perhaps we should consider the power we have as consumers. Without our consumption, these companies wouldn’t have the financial incentives to paste American flags on synthetic food, target children through advertising of junk food, and ultimately, profit off of an unhealthy population.
Our healthcare crisis is about more than health; this crisis also affects our economy and the financial viability of our government. By taking control of our health, not only do we benefit our own lives, but we contribute to the welfare of the country we celebrate on these important holidays.
