As someone who loves food and loves to eat, one of my favorite things about eating a whole food plant-based diet is that nearly all of the foods that I can eat have a lower calorie density than their animal-based or processed counterparts. This basically means that I can eat more volume and still be eating fewer calories - a win in my book! However, there are many times where you may not be able to eat more or need a more filling option as it needs to satisfy your hunger for a longer period of time.
These are all great options for foods that will keep you full, satisfied, and fueled throughout your day!
1. Plant-based proteins: While it’s true that you don’t need to worry about being protein deficient when eating a plant-based diet, plant-based proteins like beans, legumes, and even tofu can help you feel full. These foods lower your blood sugar, helping keep hunger at bay for a long time.
2. Water-rich fruits and vegetables: Sometimes when you think you are hungry, it turns out you are actually thirsty. By eating foods like watermelon, tomatoes, celery, and others with a lot of water in them, you will be satisfying your hunger and hydration needs.
3. Starchy foods: Have you noticed that when you’re really hungry, you crave potatoes, bread, or anything starchy? These carb filled foods also contain a lot of fiber, which helps to lower your blood sugar and slow down digestion, keeping you feeling full for longer. 4. Have a salad: While you may think of a salad as an appetizer or something that’ll leave you feeling hungry soon, if you add the right ingredients to that salad, you’ll be feeling full for hours. Rather than just some lettuce and maybe a few veggies like carrots or tomatoes, go wild and put on anything you can think of! Add your favorite veggies; some beans or tofu; some brown rice, quinoa, or your favorite starch option; a small amount of nuts, seeds, or avocado; and your favorite oil-free dressing for a hearty, filling, delicious meal.
